Nairobi Greenline embarks on a Tree Planting exercise
The Kenya Wildlife Service in partnership with Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) will on Saturday June 5, 2010 embark on a tree planting exercise at the Nairobi National Park to embark on the start of the Nairobi Greenline project.
The Sh35 million initiative aims at planting 250,000 trees from the park’s Cheetah Gate in Athi River to Carnivore Restaurant on Lang’ata Road and a 30-km long, 50-metre wide forest of indigenous trees shielding it from the fast-growing metropolis. In addition to the tree planting exercise, a 25,000-strong Human Greenline chain will then be formed inside the Park starting from the Carnivore Restaurant to the Athi-River Cheetah Gate.
The money will be used to cover the cost of trenching, soil preparation, fencing, sinking boreholes, piping, planting tree nurseries, irrigation, seedling transportation and labour.
The initiative will go a long way in protecting the 64-year-old park against various environmental risks due to human encroachment, pollution and human wildlife conflict.
