Black rhino ear notching and transmitter fitting exercise
7th to 12th June 2010

KWS is set to conduct an ear notching and transmitter fitting exercise on black rhinos. The operation which is in conjunction with the Narok County Council and the Frankfurt Zoological Society is expected to take place from the 7th to 12th June 2010 at the Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

The Rhino Charge 2010 is set to take place starting 30th May to 1st June 2010 at Magadi. The three day annual event is an off-road motor-sport competition that has been held in Kenya since 1989. The Prime Minister .Hon Raila Odinga presided over the unveiling of Kisumu Impala Sanctuary and Ndere Island National Park branding.The parks have undergone a complete make-over as part of a high-profile national marketing and infrastructure refurbishment campaign that started by Kenya Wildlife Service in 2005.

Restocking of Amboseli

Due to a devastating drought last year, over 50% of Amboseli’s wildebeest and zebra population was lost A census conducted inside the park at the beginning of the year counted 982 zebra and 143 wildebeest, down from 10,000 zebra and 7,000 wildebeest in the 2007 census.

Water birds count

As part of her commitment to International Waterbird Conservation, Kenya Wildlife Service is carrying out its regular six-monthly water bird count in the country’s most important water bird wetland ecosystems.
